'J.S.P. Hindoo building at Rajnagur. May 3rd 33'.
Artist: Phillips, Joseph Scott (1812-1884)
Medium: Pencil on paper
Pencil wash drawing of a Hindu temple at Rajnagar, West Bengal by Joseph Scott Phillips (1812-1884), dated May 3rd 1833. Inscribed on the reverse of this drawing is: 'J.S.P. Hindoo building at Rajnagur. May 3rd 33. This is a more correct sketch than I sent before, at least it is as correct as I could afford to make it at midday in the hot weather'.
This is from an album of drawings (46 folios) made in 1833 while Phillips was a supernumerary Second-Lieutenant at Dum Dum. The album consists of views in pencil or watercolour, some covering a trip through the Sunderbans to Dacca. A few drawings have been removed, leaving inscriptions.
