'Jangira Rocks in the Ganges'
Artist: James, Marianne Jane (b. 1805)
Water-colour and pencil drawing by Marianne Jane James of the rocks at Jahangira in the Ganges, dated 1828.
At Jahangira, on the right bank of the river Ganges, there are two great rocks of granite. One is crowned with a mosque while the other has a linga on the summit. Large boulders on the island have carvings in high relief dating from the 8th century and depicting various aspects of Vishnu and Shiva.
