Pencil and water-colour drawing of a garden house near Calcutta by Hubert Cornish (1757-1823) between 1793 and 1798. Inscribed on the reverse is: 'Garden house of the late Mrs Stephenstone afterwards Lady Essex.'

Edward Stephenson, a member of the Board of Trade of the East India Company, died on the 13th July 1784. His widow, Sarah Stephenson (nee Bazett), was remarried in England on 6 June 1786 to the fifth Earl of Essex. Lady Sarah Essex died on the 16th January 1838.
