Delhi jeweller

Artist: Simpson, William (1823-1899)

Medium: Chromolithograph

Date: 1867

Shelfmark: X108(18)

Item number: Plate 18

Genre: Print

This chromolithograph is taken from plate 18 of William Simpson's 'India: Ancient and Modern'. Simpson's work was particularly novel in that it depicted scenes from everyday India. The work of jewellers was an integral part of Indian life. They were highly skilled craftsmen catering for a population obsessed with ornamentation. Many people, especially in the remoter villages, wore all their wealth about their bodies, particularly in the form of anklets, armlets, nose-rings, necklaces and ear-rings. These were often handed down as heirlooms.
