This chromolithograph is take from plate 24 of William Simpson's 'India: Ancient and Modern'. The well was a centre of village life. Women drew water from common wells and carried pitchers on their heads. Some reservoirs or tanks had steps down to them. Simpson highlighted scenes of everyday life to create an image of the real India for his audience.
