This chromolithograph is taken from plate 45 of William Simpson's 'India: Ancient and Modern;. The Marble Rocks comprise a two-mile gorge of milky limestone cliffs hewn by the river Narmada. Near Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, they are known locally as Bheraghat. The 10th-century Hindu temple nearby is the scene of annual pilgrimage.
