This is plate 12 from James Fergusson's book, 'Ancient Architecture in Hindoostan'. Set in a valley and surrounded by lakes, Udaipur is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful cities in India. The large artificial lake of Rajsamand was built in Rajasthan, just north of Udaipur, by Raj Singh in 1660. It has a massive masonry bund (or embankment) decorated with arches and pavilions and white marble steps that go down to the lake.
