This lithograph was taken from plate 5 of 'Views in the Himalayas' by Mrs WLL Scott. The view was made from the verandah of Rothney House, recently purchased by Arnold Matthews and formerly the Simla Bank. Immediately below is the Snowdon Estate, comprising a small bungalow and servants' houses. The flat-roofed bungalow on the right is North Stoneham and on the left is Elysium Hill. The Himalayas are in the extreme distance beyond the Shali range.

Mrs Scott undertook to produce an album of popular scenes of Simla to help raise funds for the Lawrence Asylum, which educated children of European soldiers of lower ranks in India. Despite "delicate health, limited hours, the rainy season", she wrote, "it pleased God to aid me most signally in surmounting all difficulties and turning my small talent to some account".
