City Of Lucknow, Capital Of Province Of Oude
Aquatinter: Hunt, George (fl. 1800-1850)
Medium: Aquatint, coloured
This is plate 20 from Charles Ramus Forrest's 'A Picturesque tour along the rivers Ganges and Jumna, in India'. Forrest was an East India Company official who made excursions along the rivers, producing drawings "attentively copied from nature, and in many instances coloured on the spot, ... while the magic effects of the scenes represented were still impressed on [his] mental vision".
Forrest had several opportunities to visit Lucknow while stationed at Kanpur. This view shows the Great Imambra through the Rumi Darwaza (or Turkish Gate) of 1784, which is often but incorrectly considered a facsimile of the Porte Sublime of Constantinople. The gateway is topped by a vast dome cut perpendicularly and encrusted with exotic ornaments. Forrest wrote: "It is a showy and splendid ornament to this approach to the city ... but its style does not display any architectural chasteness."
