Plate 9 from the first part of James Prinsep's 'Benares Illustrated'. Prinsep (1799-1840), an antiquary and colonial administrator was assay master at the Benares Mint between 1820-30. The lithographs published in this collection were based on his original sketches of the various views of the 'holy' city of the Hindus. The plate represents the widest street in Benares. Of this view he writes:'...a street takes an oblique direction, which is indispensable, where cities are built on rivers deviating from their right line, it encounters a succession of projecting corners on either side, leaving spaces to be filled up with chubootras or raised seats; these are let out as stalls to vendors of trinkets, toys and confectionery'.
