Plate twenty from '24 Views in Indostan by William Orme'. This composition is based on a picture by Francis Swaine Ward (1736-1794). It depicts the river Yamuna, as it flows past the fort at Mathura, in Uttar Pradesh. The fort, known as the Khans Qila, was built by RAja Man Singh of Amber in the early 17th Century. Mathura is perhaps most famous for being the reputed birth place of Krishna, who is revered as the most humanised deity in the Hindu pantheon. It was also the centre for an important school of early Buddhist art.
