Plate six from the first volume of James Forbes'"Oriental Memoirs". Forbes(1749-1819)spent eighteen years of his working-life in Western India. A keen observer of nature,he compiled copious notes on the interesting vegetable productions of the region including the 'curious', Jackfruit tree. He wrote:'The groves and gardens of Bombay and the adjacent continent supply the inhabitants with guavas, plantains, bananas, custard apples, jacas...The jaca(artocarpus integrifolia)is of a prodigious size, growing from the trunk and large branches of the tree; the fruit is luscious, and of a powerful smell'.
