Plate twenty-nine from the first volume of James Forbes'"Oriental Memoirs". In February 1772 Forbes (1749-1819)set sail from Surat to Anjengo in Travancore in the south of India. This journey took him through the Concan which gave him with an occasion to see Goa. Of the scene he observed from his vessel, he wrote: 'This pleasing scene embraces the Fort of Alguarda, near the entrance of the harbour, another fortress at the opening of the river leading to the city; with the convents, churches, and villas in the groves and cocoanut woods which surround the city.'
