Sketch of Gujrat
Plate eighty-two from the third volume of James Forbes'"Oriental Memoirs". Forbes(1749-1819) spent eighteen years of his working life in India, particulalrly in Gujarat where he worked as Collector. The plate represents a typical nature-scene in Gujarat with the Cocoa-nut trees, a monkey climbing a date palm and the nests of Bayas, or Bottle-nosed Sparrows. It is an example of one of Forbes'own hand-drawn lithographs. He was interested in this new method of reproduction, which he put to good use when it came to sharing his joys with friends and family in England.
