Interior view of the island of St. Helena
Artist: Forbes, James
Plate ninety-one from the fourth volume of James Forbes' "Oriental Memoirs". In January 1784, Forbes(1749-1819)set sail for England halting briefly at Goa, Malabar and St. Helena. He spent three weeks at St. Helena taking in 'all the pleasure and variety which the small but cheerful island amply affords'. Alluding to this plate reproduced in his "Memoirs", Forbes writes: 'This was selected from a number of drawings made at St. Helena, some of which, contain the town and shipping at anchor in the road, would, perhaps, be deemed more picturesque and interesting. The present engraving gives a preferable view of the interior landscape, and manner of enclosing the fields and plantations around the farmhouses, to any of the other drawings'.
