Full-length carte-de-visite portrait of a butler, in livery and posed in the act of pouring tea, one of a series of portrait studies of ethnic types and occupations taken by Bourne and Shepherd in the early 1870s. A Butler was a title applied to the head-servant of any English or quasi-English household. He was the one who made the market trips, had charge of the domestic stores and was superintendent of the table.
