Medium: Photographic print
Photograph of the small temple at Kalyanesvari, Burdwan district taken by Joseph David Beglar in 1872-73. This photograph shows the temple's tapering shikara or tower above the square base which forms the main body of the temple. A band of sculpture with figures in erotic poses is just visible below the shikara. Although it incorporates some old pieces of stonework from an older structure at this site, the temple we see in this photograph was constructed relatively recently. It is inscribed in one place, yet unfortunately, this inscription is now almost unreadable: much of the soft stone has worn away. Nevertheless the writing provides a valuable indicator of age as it is cut in relief, a clear indication of a recent date.
