Photograph of a ratha or a four-wheeled carriage in the street in Anhilvad-Pattan (Patan), taken by Henry Cousens in the 1880s. Anhilvad-Pattan, now Patan, was the capital of Gujarat in the 11th-12th centuries under the Solanki dynasty. The town was an important cultural and artistic centre and was sacked many times by the Muslims at the end of the 12th century. This view shows a ratha used during the processions of the temples festivals to carry the statues of the divinities.
