Photographer: Jackson, J.
Medium: Photographic print
Photograph of a Burmese funeral procession at Rangoon (Yangon), taken by J. Jackson in c.1868, from an album of 43 views of Burma (Myanmar) from the Sladen Collection. After death a Burmese person would be cremated or buried. Monks, mourners and a band of musicians would take their place in a procession to accompany the coffin to the cemetery. In this view the procession has halted in the street to be photographed. The photographer, Jackson, is distinguished by his interest in documenting Burmese life including rites and rituals such as this event, and by the high quality of his work.
