Photograph of a large Burmese monastery, possibly at Wuntho in Sagaing Division, taken by Philip Adolphe Klier in the 1890s. This is a distant view of the monastery, known as a kyaung, with monks and other Burmese in the foreground. The buildings follow the traditional form of Burmese monastic architecture, consisting of raised pavilions crowned by tiered roofs decorated with elaborate ornamental wood carvings. The pavilions are surrounded by a verandah from which flights of steps descend at the cardinal points of the compass.
