Agency bungalow [Residency] at Bhuj
Medium: Photographic print
Photograph of the Agency bungalow or residency at Bhuj in Gujarat, taken by an unknown photographer during the late 1870s. The residency was situated outside the city walls to the south-west on the Mandvi road and was the home of the Government’s official representative at Bhuj. Provincial residencies were usually built in the form of bungalows or villas. ‘Bungalow’ is an anglicisation of the Hindu work ‘bangla’ and originally referred to a lightly-constructed, single-storey dwelling with a veranda built for colonial officials. This is a view from the grounds showing the flagstaff.
