Photograph of the view from a hillside looking down onto the Virupaksha temple in Vijayanagara. The Virupaksha Temple was founded in the 13th century and rebuilt in 1510 for the coronation of King Krishnadevaraya. The tall eastern gopura and other parts were renovated in the 19th century. Annual festivals in the temple celebrate the marriage of Vrupaksha, a form of Shiva, with his consort Pampa, an indigenous goddess.
