Photograph of the Babalut temple in Amritsar, from the Strachey Collection of Indian Views, taken by Shepherd and Roberston about 1863.The 150 feet high tower was built in 1778-1784 in memory of Atal Rai, the son of the Sikh Guru Hargobind, who died at the tender age of nine. The little boy was called ‘Baba’ because he was a precocious child, wise beyond his years.
