Photograph of Govind Mandir from the Lee-Warner Collection taken by Deen Dayal in 1882. The Govind Mandir or Nrsing Dev Palace is situated on an outcrop of rock overlooking Datia in Madhya Pradesh. It was built by Bir Singh Deo, c. 1620 at the height of the Bundela Rajput’s power. Often regarded as one of the finest domestic buildings in India, even though it was never actually occupied, it remains a testament to the architectural accomplishment of the Rajputs. Underneath there is a labyrinth of large rooms hewn into the rock on different levels to provide accommodation in hot weather. This is a general view of the palace taken from the front.
