Photograph of a Buddhist sculpture slab from the lower monastery at Nutta in Peshawar District showing the Nirvana of Buddha.'[Buddha] is here represented lying on a four-legged bed with a matrass and pillow, surrounded by the chiefs of the Mallians of Kusinagara...The evil-disposed cousin Devadetta is represented at the back with a diabolical expression of glee. A seated figure, with his back turned, is shown at the foot of the bed. The prostrate figure is probably one of the disciples ill from grief...' Illustrations of Graeco-Buddhist sculptures from the Yusufzai District, in vol. I of H.H. Cole, Preservation of monuments in India (c. 1885), pl. 22.
