A hand-coloured print of burning of the dead on the Hooghly, from the Fiebig Collection: Views of Calcutta and Surrounding Districts, taken by Frederick Fiebig in 1851. This is a distant view of a cremation on the banks of the River Hooghly, a distributory of the Ganges, the sacred river of the Hindus. Many Hindus bring the dying to the sacred banks of the Ganges to be cremated and have their ashes scattered on the waters.
