A hand-coloured print of convent and church, Bandel, from the Fiebig Collection: Views of Calcutta and Surrounding Districts, taken by Frederick Fiebig in 1851. This is a view from the east, from the bank of the Hooghly, looking towards the convent buildings, with the church beyond. Bandel, 1.6 km north of Hooghly was made a Portuguese settlement in 1580. A Portuguese monastery and church were built here in 1599 but was demolished in 1640. In 1660 John Gomez de Soto rebuilt the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary. The main building in this view, on the right, is St Augustine's Hall, built around 1820, which contained a dining room and guests' rooms. In1996, this hall appeared to be in the process of demolition, or at the very least major refurbishment.
