Photograph of a village scene in Burma (Myanmar), taken by Watts and Skeen in the 1890s, from the Curzon Collection. This view along a street gives an impression of rural Burmese life and shows the thatched palm houses which are characteristic of Burmese village dwellings. They are built out of wood and woven bamboo with steeply-pitched thatched roofs to facilitate the run-off of monsoon rains. They are also raised on posts using a pile construction design which has evolved in tropical areas to protect the house from flooding, keep it cool and sound, and provide a storage area.
