This print was taken by the Samuel Bourne in the 1860s to form part of an album entitled 'Photographs of India and Overland Route'. It shows a canal and wooden and brick buildings to either side in the Kashmiri city of Srinagar in the modern-day state of Jammu and Kashmire in north-western India. Natural lakes, picturesque canals and narrow lanes winding amongst old timber houses typify Srinagar. The city was a favourite of the medieval Mughal Emperors as it was cool and refreshing after the heat of the plains of North India where they held their government. They planted beautiful gardens with stepped terraces and flowing watercourses to further enhance their surroundings.
