Photograph from the riverside looking towards the Mansarovar building from 'Views of Benares, from the River Side' taken by Brajo Gopal Bromochary in 1869. "Above the Ghat is a place called Mansarovar which consists of a deep tank and a large collection of shrines all around it." The Mansarovar Ghat is named after the holy lake Manasa at the foot of Mount Kailash, Lord Shiva's legendary abode in the Himalayas. Chauki Ghat is famous for the huge tree at the top which shelters a great array of stone nagas (serpent deities).
