Photograph of a colossal statue of a Jain tirthankara at Bahuriband, Jabalpur District taken by Henry Cousens between 1892 and 1894. Bahuriband is located in the modern state of Madhya Pradesh. The town is surrounded by a complex system of dams, many of which are used for irrigation purposes. The town was once a large city which is attested to by the large quantities of ancient brick and pottery that can be found all around Bahuriband. Few remains of any interest survive from this period, other than the statue of a Jain figure shown in this photograph. Standing at 12 feet 2 inches high it is seen in this photograph with the lower portion only recently excavated. An inscription of seven lines on the pedestal commemorates the erection of the statue which Cunningham dates to between 1022 and 1047.
