Close view of pillar with sculptured figure from the Pudu Mandapa, Minakshi Sundareshvara Temple, Madurai. 10032314
Photographer: Nicholas and Company
Medium: Photographic print
Photograph of a close view of a pillar from the Pudu Mandapa at the Minakshi Sundareshvara Temple in Madurai from the Archaeological Survey of India Collections, taken by Nicholas and company in c.1882. This is a dark and indistinct print taken within the Pudu Mandapa, a long hall within the Minakshi Sundareshvara Temple complex built by Tirumala Nayak (1623-1659). The hall contains piers carved with yalis, or lion-like fantastic beasts and portrait sculptures of the Nayaka rulers and their ministers. The photograph was credited to Cole in Bloch's list, but is almost certainly part of the series taken for Cole by Nicholas & Co. of Madras.
