View of the Chhattar Mahal Palace at Bundi in Rajasthan by Gunpatrao Abajee Kale, c.1900. The photograph is from an album of views of Bundi formerly in the collection of Horatio Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener of Khartoum and Broome, (1850-1916), who was Commander in Chief of India between 1902 and 1909. This is the largest of the palaces situated on the hillside at Bundi and was built in the 1660s by Maharao Chattar Sal. It was built out of green serpentine rock in the Rajput style and displays characteristic design elements such as lotus flower spandrels and elephant symbols.
