Compound to traveller's bungalow [Bengal]
Photographer: Fiebig, Frederick
Medium: Photographic print
A hand-coloured print of a dak bungalow in Bengal, from the Fiebig Collection: Views of Calcutta and Surrounding Districts, taken by Frederick Fiebig in 1851. View of a compound, or courtyard garden area, of a dak bungalow at an unidentified location. These were shelters maintained by the Indian Government for use by travellers as resting places and contained beds, tables, bathrooms and food, all at nominal cost. They were often spaced ten to fifteen miles apart on main travel routes and on less travelled roads from forty to fifty miles apart.
