Photograph taken by Charles T. Scowen & Co. the 1880s of a street scene in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, from an album of 62 views of India and Ceylon. Although it existed as a small seaport from antiquity and was a significant stop for the Muslim traders of the medieval period, Colombo developed rapidly under successive European efforts, first by the Portuguese who appeared here in the early 16th century and stayed for nearly 150 years, then under the Dutch who occupied it for 140 years. The British took Colombo from the Dutch in 1796 and developed it into a modern port city.
