Photograph taken by Scowen & Co. in the 1880s of the Grand Oriental Hotel in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, from an album of 62 views of India and Ceylon. The view looks along the street towards the hotel with an arcade of commercial premises in the foreground. The building was constructed in 1837 and originally housed British soldiers. It was converted to a hotel in 1875 and is situated on the waterfront near the harbour and the district known as 'The Fort', the commercial centre of the city and the original site of the now non-existent 17th century Dutch Fort.
