Medium: Photographic print
Photograph of a clump of bamboos in Peradeniya Gardens near Kandy, Sri Lanka, taken by an unknown photographer in the 1880s. Established by the British in 1821, the Royal Botanical Gardens were originally the Pleasure Gardens of the Kandyan Kings. As well as a large collection of bamboos, over one hundred species of palm and a collection of medicinal plants, the garden keeps three hundred species of orchid in the Orchid House.
