Photograph of stupas at the caves of Bhaja, Pune District, taken by Henry Cousens in c.1880, from the Archaeological Survey of India Collections. At Bhaja, south of Karli, there are more than twenty rock-cut Buddhist monasteries from the Satavahana period, that were excavated in the 2nd century BC. This view shows a group of rock cut hemispherical stupas in one of the excavations.
