Close view of carved stonework on vedi mandapa of the Vyaghreshvari Temple, Dhenuj, Gujarat

Photographer: Cousens, Henry
Medium: Photographic print
Date: 1885

Photograph of the carved stonework on the outer wall of the Vyaghreshvari Temple at Dhenuj in Gujarat, taken by Henry Cousens in the 1880s, from the Archaeological Survey of India Collections. The Vyaghresvari temple, undated, is located in the southern section of Dhenuj [Dhinoj] in northern Gujarat near Patan. It is dedicated to the patron goddess of the Sonis (goldsmiths) and of the Mesri Srimali Vaniyas. The temple has been largely rebuilt; the low screen wall around the mandapa and the pillars are part of the original structure. The screen wall or vedi is richly carved with floral patterns alternating with compartments containing Shaiva figures.
