Full-length standing carte-de-visite portrait of a servant, standing behind a chair on which a dog sleeps, one of a series of portrait studies of ethnic types and occupations taken by Bourne and Shepherd in the early 1870s. In 19th century British India a bearer referred to a domestic servant who was in charge of his master's clothes, household furniture, and often, his petty cash.
