Photograph of the Naubhat Khana, Fatehpur Sikri, from the Archaeological Survey of India Collections, taken by Edmund William Smith in 1892. The city of Fatehpur Sikri was built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar (r.1556-1605) between 1571 and 1585. This is a view of the north-eastern gateway of the city, the Naubhat Khana. Musicians played in a gallery above the gateway to announce the arrival of the Emperor.
