Photograph of Palitana from Satrunjaya Hill, taken by Henry Cousens in the 1880s-90s. Palitana is a town in the modern state of Gujarat. Satrunjaya is an ancient Jain place of pilgrimage as it is believed that Pundarika, the main disciple of the first Jain Tirthankara Adinatha, obtained enlightenment here. On the hill's two summits which rise 600 m above the town of Palitana, there are hundreds of multi-spired temples. Every day pilgrims come to pay reverence to a wide variety of different Jain saints. The temples were built with funds donated by merchants and they are arranged in compounds named after the donor. Most of these temple are not earlier than the 16th century as many were destroyed by the Muslims in the 14th-15th centuries
