Photograph taken about 1900 by the Government photographer, Zacharias D'Cruz of a distant view of Darragh's Oil Mill in Quilon town. It is one of 76 prints in an album entitled 'Album of South Indian Views'. of the Curzon Collection. Copra, the dried kernel of the coconut, was one of the principal articles of export. Copra was first exported to European ports by Darragh of Alleppey about 1882 but soon went out of business. Business in coconut oil was first started in Alleppey about the 1860s. The Messrs. Darragh Smail & Co. began their oil-business in Alleppey and Quilon in the early part of the 20th century.
