Photograph taken in 1891 by an unknown photographer showing the erection of sheds in the Calcutta Docks. In March 1884, official sanction for the adoption of Kidderpore as the site docks to provide suitable accommodation for the export trade was given. In 1889-90, the tidal basin had been completed and brought into use and dock number one was almost completed. In June 1891, construction of the dock sheds was begun. It had been proposed by the Port Commissioners that strips of land about 250 ft in width on both sides of the dock were to be used for the construction of warehouses, both public and private. These were to be in close proximity to the docks and shipping, and in direct communication with the entire railway system.
