Photograph taken by an unknown photographer in the 1870s, from the 'Sir Charles Aitchison Album of Views in India and Burma', part of the Dunlop Smith Collection. The view was taken along the road through the pass leading to the city of Jaipur in Rajasthan, with laundry laid out to dry on the banks of the stream in the foreground. The capital city of Rajasthan, it was founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh (ruled 1700–43) as a new capital replacing Amber (Amer), the ancient capital of the Kacchwaha Rajputs.
