This photograph of the view of the entrance to the nave of the Puthu Mandapam of the Meenakshi Sundareshvara temple, Madurai, Tamilnadu, is part of a collection entitled 'Photographic Views in Madurai ' (Madras, 1858) and was taken by Linnaeus Tripe in 1858. The figures sculpted on the pillars depict God Shiva feeding an elephant, with the goddess by his side, flanked by a brahmin on the right and God Vishnu on the left.
