Photograph of the Hathi Pol (identification uncertain) at Udaipur in Rajasthan, by O.S. Baudesson in 1882, from the Archaeological Survey of India Collections. Udaipur was established as the new capital of the Sisodia Rajput by Udai Singh (r.1567-72) after the sack of Chittorgarh by the Mughal armies of Akbar in 1567.
The Old City is surrounded by 17th century fortifications with huge bastions and has five main gates. The Hathi Pol or elephant Gate is in the north and leads to City palace, the main royal residence in Udaipur.
