Photograph of farmers on the Dal Lake at Srinagar in the modern-day state of Jammu and Kashmir, taken by an unknown photographer in the 1890s. These workers are tending their floating plant beds. Dal Lake is the largest in Srinagar and considered the most beautiful in the area. It is particularly famous for its intricately decorated and well-furnished houseboats and 'shikara' boats which are used as floating shops as well as for transporting both goods and people on the lake. The boat communities have lived in this way for centuries and sometimes rarely set foot on land. The 'shikara' is often likened to a gondola and this has led to the area being called 'The Venice of the East'.
