It rises in the Western Ghats and flows eastwards through the centre of the Tirunelveli district to the sea at Kolkai. Papanasam means 'absolution of sin' and the waterfall is an important pilgrimage spot as people who bathe here are supposedly cleansed of sin. The river is abundant with fish believed to be redeemed souls.
