Photograph of the Madaneshvara temple at Huli, taken by James Burgess in 1874. This Chalukya temple is situated at the foot of a steep hill. It consists of a shrine with a closed hall preceded by an open hall with a wide sloping roof supported by short pillars. This hall was crowned by a type of roof typical of the Nagara or northern Indian architecture with some Dravidian or southern variations. The decoration on the outer walls consists of miniature architectural details, makaras or aquatic monsters and kirttimukhas. The temple has been dated just after AD 1100.
